Improving Lives through Policy and Systems Change
First 5 LA refers to systems change as a fundamental shift in the governmental agencies, policies and programs that collectively work to meet a particular set of family needs. It involves making changes to the system’s components, processes and structures to achieve different and more desirable results. Systems change work requires addressing root causes rather than just addressing symptoms. For example, in addressing poverty, a systems change approach might involve not only providing temporary aid but also reevaluating and restructuring economic and social systems to reduce poverty at its source.
In collaboration with First 5 LA’s goals and Best Start Wilmington Community Change Agenda’s priorities, we seek projects that create lasting policy and systems change to improve the lives of children prenatal to age 5 and their families. Proposals must advance one of the core goals: poverty alleviation, housing security, early care and education and ensuring services and supports are culturally affirming and responsive.
